Women’s Day Derby 2012 – A Great Success!

Hundreds of women, girls and male supporters enjoyed this year’s celebration of International Women’s Day at the Assembly Rooms.

Former Olympian Fiona May travelled from Italy to her home town of Derby to share her inspiring story at the event. Following her talk she took questions from the audience along with the day’s other speakers. They included Katrina Atherton, of East Midlands film production company A Star Media, Mid-Derbyshire MP Pauline Latham, motivational speaker Sharon Roberts of Vision and artist Marinella Sanatore.

Women also took part in various workshops on the day, delivered by motivational trainers Vanessa Boon, Alison Hollingworth, Maureen Finch, Frances Taylor and Caroline Feneley.

Visitors enjoyed a diverse showcase of women’s talent from tap dancers to boxercise skills and a special appearance from Dale Diva – winners of Channel 5 showchoir contest Don’t Stop Believing!

The balloon launch was also a highlight of the day; many people attached a pledge or aspiration for women to the eco-friendly balloons before they were released into the sky.

Dionne Reid, Chair of the event planning committee, said the event was “absolutely fantastic” and the best in her five-year tenure as Chair. The planning committee presented Dionne with flowers in recognition of her commitment to women’s day.
