Meet the Derby Soroptimists tackling human trafficking

Soroptimist International (SI), which is an international women’s organisation with 90,000 members, was among the stalls at International Women’s Day Festival Derby last Saturday. The Derby club is celebrating its 77th year – we found out more about their excellent work for women, both locally and worldwide:

“Our mission, adopted worldwide, is to improve life outcomes for women and girls and we have consultative status at the UN on this issue. Examples of SI Derby’s local work are running courses at Derby Women’s Centre on confidence building and skills for returning to work, (a new course starts on 13th March) and providing a local women’s refuge with welcome packs for women who have had to leave home with nothing due to domestic violence. We also look after a small garden so that the women have a quiet place for reflection.

“We have raised awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery and as part of a national campaign with the Prison Reform Trust, we have questioned local agencies about the treatment of women in the justice system.

Internationally we raise funds to train birth attendants in The Gambia; for our “See Solar Cook Solar” project and for a charity in Ethiopia which trains girls with no family support in skills to help them support themselves”.
