About us

International Women’s Day (IWD) Derby is a small voluntary group launched in August 2013 to plan an annual event in Derby to mark this global celebration. Our team of volunteers previously came under the Derby City Council Diversity Forum community engagement structure, and has been led by various local women’s centres over the years, but as the event grew each year the group evolved and is now a community-led independent group.

International Women’s Day is marked on 8th March each year around the world as part of the International Women’s Month & Women’s HERstory Month of March.

Our IWD events are vibrant with role model speakers, inspiring workshops, a showcase of local performers, multicultural arts and foods, crafts, campaigns & causes, exhibits and activities; the events are diversity friendly with disabled access. We are LGB and trans inclusive. The event is family-friendly with children’s activities. Supporters of all gender identities, including men, are very welcome.

International Women’s Day is about –

  • Celebrating women’s achievements
  • Inspiring women & girls to take up new opportunities
  • Raising awareness of the issues affecting women and girls worldwide
  • Renewing efforts to break down gender barriers
  • Raising aspirations and broadening horizons

Our committee works closely with partners and community groups to facilitate a local IWD event. Each year these local IWD events attract hundreds of women and girls and other supporters, bringing them together with local grass roots campaigns, women’s services, employers, education providers, agencies, charities and inspiring role models.

  1. We’re organizing and International Women’s Day event in Arcata, California, and we love your graphics–particularly the 2013 poster graphic. Is there any way we can use that graphic for our poster?
